The Maryland Higher Education Commission has approved the Department’s proposal to restructure the major in SOCIOLOGY.

This program has demonstrated a strong potential for success and many students will find it useful as they plan their future careers. To find more about the major visit Dr. Elias L. Taylor, Program Coordinator, in GJ 433.

Additionally, the Curriculum Committee approved a minor program in Anthropology titled Socio-Cultural Studies. It consists of 18 credits, and it will allow Coppin students to explore additional job opportunities in humanistic careers such as health planning, urban development, cultural resources management, and archaeological resources. University of Maryland’s

Summer Research Initiative Program

The Summer Research Initiative was initiated in 1999 by the University of Maryland College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.  The Initiative is part of the College’s longstanding commitment to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who pursue graduate degrees in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences.

This year the Initiative will bring 10-12 students to the Maryland campus for an 8-week program from June 4 - July 29, 2006.  The Summer Research Initiative is a full-time, 40 hour per week commitment. Working side-by-side with a faculty mentor on a faculty-guided research project, students gain valuable experience in their fields of interest.  They also participate in a weekly seminar series and visit local research institutions in the Washington area such as the National Institutes of Health. Students will present their work at a poster session at the end of the program.

Eligibility Requirements

Students who will be seniors in summer 2006 are eligible.  The University of Maryland has a strong institutional commitment to the principle of diversity.  In that spirit, we are very interested in receiving applications from a broad spectrum of individuals, including African American, Hispanic, and American Indian students.  International students with an F-1 or other visa must have appropriate work permits and must hold a social security card when they apply to the program.

Applicants should also have the following:

  • an excellent academic record with a GPA of at least 3.2 in their major
  • a strong interest in pursuing graduate study in one of the social sciences
  • previous research experience
  • completed a statistics or research methodology course
  • proficient computer knowledge

Financial Support

Accepted students will receive round-trip air fare, room and board in on-campus University housing, and a stipend of $2,700.
